Cheetah candlestick

A seated cheetah supports a leafy candle cup in this handmade ceramic candlestick. Constructed from slabs and hand-modelled into a hollow form, each piece is individually hand-painted with underglaze and finished with glaze. Golden tones, dark spots and green botanical details bring the sculpture to life. Twice fired, it carries the individual character of the maker’s hand.

Meet the subject

Meet Khanya, who likes to begin her Zululand mornings somewhere with a view. She sits upright, scanning the grass with such concentration that even a distant flick of movement deserves her attention. Once the Zululand heat settles in, however, her plans become considerably less ambitious: shade first, everything else later.
