Rhino beetle jar

A sculpted rhinoceros beetle crowns the removable lid of this small handmade earthenware jar. Its curved horn and ridged, metallic-toned wing cases contrast with the dark, textured exterior and bright green glazed interior. Small feet lift the rounded vessel from the surface. At 8cm long, this distinctive little piece brings sculpture and a hidden compartment together without losing the character of the maker’s hand.

Meet the subject

Meet Themba, a small Zululand character with an impressive sense of his own importance. He approaches every obstacle as though it were a useful test of determination. There is always another corner to explore and another interesting surface to inspect. When he finally pauses, that magnificent horn still makes him look rather busy.
