Giraffe on Stand

This handmade ceramic giraffe brings an elongated sculptural form to a raised display stand. Constructed from slabs into a hollow structure, each piece is shaped and modelled by hand. Individually hand-painted markings in underglaze, complemented by glaze and two firings, give the surface depth while preserving the distinctive character of each handmade sculpture.

Meet the subject

Meet Lazy Baby, whose mum spends a good part of her day encouraging him to keep up. He is perfectly well; he simply thinks the Zululand heat calls for a more relaxed approach to walking. Sweet-natured and entirely comfortable with his own rhythm, this young Zululand giraffe would often prefer just a few more minutes of sitting down.
